As the cold weather arrives again, there’s a constant debate between staying warm and keeping your heating bill down. Here are 8 ways to stay warm at home without turning up the heat:
- Seal your windows and doors. Drafts and air leaks allow cold air in. You can purchase window and door sealing kits at your local home improvement store.
- Light a fire. If you have a fireplace in your house, light a fire and stay warm. You will stay warm AND it will keep your heating bill down.
- Flip on the fan. Many people don’t know that most fans are reversible: one direction pushes air down, creating a nice breeze; the other direction sucks air up, helping you distribute heat in winter. Typically, turning your fan clockwise should help with distributing heat. (Check to see if your fan has a switch on the motor too.)
- Add a layer. Grab another pair of socks, add a sweatshirt— bundle up!
- Grab a blanket. As the temperature outside declines, grab a blanket to stay warm and cozy inside.
- Close the vent. If you have a space you aren’t using, close the vent. Double check to make sure all of your vents are open and warm air is coming out of them.
- Harness the sun. If the sun is out, open your blinds and let it warm your house. As soon as the sun sets, close your blinds to keep it warm.
- Stay hydrated. Drinking water can help you stay warm —it’s actually easier to stay warm with more water in your system. You can also add warm liquids (think tea, coffee, hot chocolate, soup) to raise your body temperature.
It’s okay if you aren’t a fan of the cold weather. Stay inside, under a blanket and watch a movie. Here is everything that is being released on Netflix this month!
